Artist Interview For "DAR VIDA".

Portraits de Famille Dar Vida Blog Post Artist Interview
001. Who are you and how would you describe your artistic style?

I'm Caitlin Flood-Molyneux and I'm a contemporary Welsh artist. My artwork is all based on how we attach imagery to memory and my work is build up on mixed media, so I use a lot of painting, sketching and collage in my works. I love combining all of them together and my practice is mainly based on process and outcome is very secondary.

002. Why did you choose to collaborate with Portraits de Famille on a capsule?

The collaboration felt so natural, as a lot of our values aligned with making something that tells a story, but also translating that into clothing I thought it would be very interesting. I wanted to make something that feels timeless, but also is something that people can collect, wear and feel confident in.

003. What inspires you most about Portraits de Famille collaborating with artists on capsules?

I love the way that they work with artists. Having such creative freedom and input into the garments, what they look like, the colors, everything down to the finest detail. I really love that and respect that about them. It does feel like a true partnership. I'm really excited about it because it's connecting art and fashion, which is something I really look forward to.

004.  What was the inspiration behind the "DAR VIDA" capsule and its designs?

The collection draws on symbolism of passion, resilience and identity found in Spanish culture. I use a lot of symbolism in my work and Spanish culture leans heavily on symbolism and emotion, so I wanted to bring that into this collection and I had a lot of fun making bold expressive works. It was really nice making something that transforms into that. There's lots of heavy symbolism rooted in emotion that is in Spanish culture, such as dramatic use of color and costume, reflecting different emotions like passion, loss and identity. That mirrors my practice as well, so it just made to make something that is vibrant and I wanted to make something that feels vintage. It just felt right to mix these worlds and it was a beautiful thing to make.

005. What was your creative process when conceptualizing and designing the "DAR VIDA" capsule?

So, I started the collection by doing a lot of research. I wanted to see what symbols were there, what symbols felt strong to me and what I felt connected to. Looking at colors, looking at textures and a lot of the times I was listening to music, watching films and looking at imagery. After finding things that I felt inspired by, I started making drawings and paintings from them. I always start with a pen and paper, so making lots of sketches.

Then, I started doing mixed media drawings and paintings, because I wanted to see what feel I wanted to get from the collection and then translating that into digital, which was really fun as it's something that I've recently started doing. I wanted to get that vintage feel from the collection and make it feel timeless.

006. If you could describe the "DAR VIDA" capsule in three words, what would they be?

Three words to describe the collection would be resilience, movement and passion.

007. How do you want people to feel when they wear your designs?

When people wear the designs I want them to feel confident and I want them to feel good.

008. What's a creative risk you took that changed your work forever?

A creative risk that I took was to combine lots of different elements together in one piece. So, something that kind of sounds chaotic and too busy as a painting is something that I enjoy doing with my work. My head is very busy, so I think that reflects into my painting and into my artwork. It's a creative risk that I took, but it paid off.

009. What’s the most unexpected source of inspiration you've ever had?

I find inspiration everywhere, it doesn't matter if it's typography on a poster, texture on a wall or a bit of graffiti somewhere. Textures and colors around me always inspire me. My phone is filled with loads of notes of random ideas of paintings or photos of textures and color combinations, so I always find inspiration.

010. What's a dream project you haven't worked on yet, but would love to?

My dream project would be to design a shoe. I love shoes and I feel like it's something very different to what I have done before, so that would definitely be my dream project and hopefully something that happens soon.

The Famille.
