Sheyi Adebayo.

Artist Interview for "LIQUID".

Portraits de Famille Liquid Blog Post Artist Interview
001. Who are you and how would you describe your artistic style?

I'm Sheyi Adebayo and I'm a graphic designer based in London. I'd describe my style as quite chaotic, very playful with shapes, colors, typography and layouts. My visual style is very retro, mostly from 90s to 2000s era, when it comes to TV adverts, music videos and a lot of computer games. On the contrary, I also love minimalism, sleek typography and graphic layouts when it comes to editorials, campaigns and general print design. I tend to combine the chaotic and the minimal aesthetic together, which brings a sense of balance to my designs.

002. Why did you choose to collaborate with Portraits de Famille on a capsule?

I really like how this collaboration gives artists the creative freedom in creating any visual ideas on themes and seeing that translated on clothing sounded really cool to me.

003. How do you see the role of fashion in telling an artist's story?

Fashion plays a crucial role in telling artist's stories because it accesses an immediate visual language for themes, identity and emotions.

004.  What was the inspiration behind this capsule and its designs?

I wanted to create something really classy and vintage. Something that feels like collecting a pack of cards, so the classic cocktail theme came to mind. I wanted each cocktail design to have its own visual language but the aesthetic to still feel cohesive with the others.

005. What was your creative process when conceptualizing and designing this capsule?

I always start by sketching out how I'll lay out the design and then I begin experimenting on Photoshop and Illustrator, playing around with the typography and the visual aesthetic of the cocktails. A lot of the time I just go with the flow and I see what feels right to me in the moment.

006. How does your personal story or background find its way into your work?

Honestly, it's an accumulation of memories in my subconscious. This always seems to seep through into my work.

007. What do you hope collectors will remember or talk about when they see or wear your designs?

I hope that when people see or wear my designs it represents their favorite cocktails, reminds them of the stories they had when drinking them and to feel like they own a rare collectible, like a rare Pokémon card.

008. What's a creative risk you took that changed your work forever?

When I graduated from university, I was very reluctant to share my work. I just hated to share anything. But then because I always saw other artists and designers doing daily challenges, I thought I should try and challenge myself. So, I did a poster every single day for many years and that developed into the style I've got right now.

009. What’s the most unexpected source of inspiration you've ever had?

As my style has developed into this very retro aesthetic, I started to notice the bizarre color palettes, forms and shapes. I realized, they pretty much came from a lot of old children's games from computers and shows from the late 90s to early 2000s, like Barney, Teletubbies, Rugrats and Cartoon Network.

010. What's a dream project you haven't worked on yet, but would love to?

As I'm getting back to my roots in painting, I would love to have my artwork displayed in art galleries at some point in time. That would be really cool.

The Famille.
